Class Notes: Classroom discourse analysis is a qualitative research method used by researchers and educators to examine talk and interactions within classrooms—how do teachers and students interact with each other to make meaning in both formal and informal ways? In this class, we will study key topics that have been explored by classroom discourse analysts (e.g., turn-taking and feedback patterns, story-telling resources, using multiple language), and you will learn how to collect and analyze classroom data (primarily oral data, but also textual and visual artifacts). Specifically, you will get hands-on practice by “doing” discourse analysis on real classroom data (preferably from a class you are teaching). In all, you will learn how to use classroom discourse analysis as a research method, as well as develop a critical awareness of your own language use in educational contexts to support your teaching practice. The research methods you learn in this course will be especially useful to graduate students who are interested in examining classroom interactions as data for their Teaching Internship, thesis/dissertation, or future research projects.
