Class Notes: This course is designed for English as a second/foreign language teachers—pre-service or practicing teachers—to advance their knowledge and develop their skills in using pedagogical practices that accommodate the academic and sociocultural needs of culturally and linguistically diverse students. We will discuss principles of postmethod pedagogy, anti-racist TESOL, translanguaging pedagogy, and socioculturally-oriented second/foreign language education. Students will expand their understanding on how to support emergent bilinguals—at various ages and proficiency levels, and in diverse contexts—and develop a critical awareness of the power and value of biliteracy and bilingualism as tools for participation and engagement in a democratic society. We will all work to become teachers who are socially-just, culturally responsible, and linguistically aware. Course assignments will emphasize reflection on your own teacher identity, as well as development of your teaching practices.
